Rules of profile-sites

These days profile-sites like linkedin, orkut, facebook, myspace have become part and parcel of one's lives. Everyone seems to have his/her profile listed (that includes me :)). Anyways I learnt a few things about adding one's profiles to these sites-

  1. When adding friends be sure to invite/add to those profiles which your friend uses actively.
  2. Profiles appear to be of two kinds - professional and non-professional.
  3. Desis seem to use orkut a lot while the Americans seem to use facebook and myspace the most. Now there are exceptions obviously.
  4. Be like a fisherman (or a fisherwoman:) - Try to cast your net far and wide. Hey you never know! And you lose nothing by inviting except breaking the ice between you and a fellow human-being! Righty!
  5. And if you do not get a response immediately do not despair. It might be that some people do not check their e-mails or their profile-sites regularly. So have patience. Patience always helps you know!

I guess design plays a very important role in people's selection of profile-sites. Students seem to value 'design' the most and of all the profile-sites, american students seem to like facebook the most (at least all the people I know). To me, facebook is like a hollywood flick while orkut seems to be like our own desi bollywood 'masala' film with all the 'jigel-jigel'. Myspace seems to have a mixed following as the design is unique.

There is a saying-'A picture is worth a thousand words'. There is another saying-'The face is the index of the mind'. Both are absolutely true and this is nowhere else more evident than in profile-sites. Especially when it comes to facebook, students seem to select the main picture (profile-badge) with great care. There is something unique about these profile-badge pictures in most of the profiles. Probably the profile-owner is trying to convey something to others!

Now go ahead guys and gals! Extend your horizons far and wide. Best of luck.
